More Flexibility.               More Efficiency.               More Freedom.

This study examines the COVID-19 pandemic as a threshold moment that accelerated societal shifts in work, leisure, and commerce. We investigate whether this shift is an unwelcome disruption or a necessary revolution, focusing on the rise of 'slack-off'—the need for a flexible work-life balance—in our reshaped post-pandemic world. We propose the pandemic expedited, not initiated these shifts, pushing society over a preexisting threshold. The study seeks to elucidate how individuals adjust their routines, either resisting or embracing these changes, and balancing productivity and relaxation in our transformed societal landscape.

Slack-off Vs. Working

We invited five groups of experimenters to explore in the space we designed. They needed to complete the assigned "task" - filling out a vague and lengthy form, and then escape the studio. In the studio, there are many ways to escape and waste time, such as drinking, playing darts, reading leisure books, and filling out leave forms, allowing them to leave the space without completing the "task".

We originally thought that the participants would try their best to explore this space and find ways to escape, but the results showed that the vast majority of participants chose to obediently complete the form and did not explore the space extensively before completing the form.
